<p>A mentee seeking a mentor-mentee relationship is often heard to say: &#8220;I know I&#8217;m stuck! Your experience can help me see my knowing&#8221;.</p>
<p><u>Two Notable Guides</u></p>
<p>Two notable people have passed through my life. One was my supervisor when I worked as a playground leader in my late teens. He showed me the path of freethinking and the creative process. Through his encouragement, I started to write as a way to share my thoughts and feelings. His spirit remains with me today even though his name escapes me.</p>
<p>A second person gave me the gift of his time to dialogue so I might expand my ideas. Our conversations were glorious. When Gerard passed from this world, I bought a portion of his estate re: the terms and concepts, processes and instruments to undertake organizational culture assessment. Then, through continued research and considerable thinking, reflecting and presenting, I continue to honour our relationship by expanding our/my theory and practice.</p>
<p>And today, I guide others. I believe in the adage &#8216;you educate what you love to learn.&#8217; Through our conversations I generate new ideas for myself. Therefore, my thinking and practice expands. In return, I can share these insights as well.</p>
<p><u>Mentoring &#8211; The 14 Truths</u></p>
<p>1. Mentors enter the relationship to guide mentees to their knowing. In other words, they both engage in social construction of knowledge, then wisdom.</p>
<p>2. Mentor starts with who the learner is today. For example, if the person is opening a new business, the conversation starts with entrepreneurship and the learner being an entrepreneur. In doing so, there is shared context for the relationship &#8211; a place to start that is public to both.</p>
<p>3. Mentoring is a person-centred, learning-centred (humanistic) approach for shared trust, respect, fairness, caring, responsibility and a willingness to develop community.</p>
<p>4. The learner invitees the advisor to the connection. However, it&#8217;s on the shoulders of the advisor to decide if the request is of benefit to both. The decision to guide is sacred!</p>
<p>5. The person is on a learning journey (adventure) where and when the person may [or may not] request advice and guidance. Because of the trust and respect in the relationship, the mentor knows when to share and when to be quiet.</p>
<p>6. The relationship continues as long as the person derives usefulness from the stories.</p>
<p>7. The shared learning conversations are open, nurturing and vibrant. Of what they share, the insights must be relevant and applicable. Confidentiality binds the relationship!</p>
<p>8. The connection can be far away or close. Face-to-face is preferred because listening through what you see is important to the relationship. Distance learning is now possible with the new video technologies.</p>
<p>9. Mentors must ensure fair exchange in the connections. Their vested interest focuses on learners gaining insights. Mentors fulfill their need to serve. This need originates from a sense of informed quietness.</p>
<p>10. It&#8217;s the learner&#8217;s decision to use the insights wisely. While options are given by the advisor, the learner makes the ethical decision to move on.</p>
<p>11. Advisors recognize and assist with continual learning. They offer recognition and corrective guidance as appropriate. More important, they offer their skill and knowledge insights.</p>
<p>12. The connection is transformational rather than transactional. And where possible the relationship becomes transcendent. That is, together and individually, they are moving ahead without either knowing the destination. Their relationship embodies faith.</p>
<p>13. Each learner is unique and deserves to be honoured and celebrated.</p>
<p>14. Mentors are &#8216;guides on the rides&#8217;, partners, companions. They counter feelings of &#8216;aloneness&#8217; along the learner&#8217;s journeys. Learners know someone is available to share their feelings and thoughts.</p>
<p>These 14 insights frame my truth. They are based on my experience to date. They will continue to evolve.</p>

When an employee makes a mistake, be direct, be forthright and care enough to provide feedback.</p>

Start with &#8220;why&#8221; you are giving feedback. You want the employee to improve or change in a positive way. This starts by providing a very clear and concise explanation of what did not go right or what the manager has as a concern. Just be straight forward and confident in what you feel needs improvement. Allow the individual to comment but do not accept anything that removes the responsibility for the results that occurred.
