In February 2003, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (&#8220;EEOC&#8221;) notified NAS that Regalado had filed a sex discrimination charge against the company pursuant to Title VII, the federal law that prohibits employment discrimination based on various factors, including sex. Three weeks later, NAS terminated Thompson&#8217;s employment. Thompson then filed a retaliation claim with the EEOC, and ultimately a lawsuit in federal court, against NAS under Title VII. Thompson claimed that NAS fired him to retaliate against Regalado for filing the EEOC charge against the company. The district court dismissed the case, holding that Title VII does not permit third party retaliation claims. The United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit affirmed.</p>
<p>In reversing the lower courts&#8217; rulings, the Supreme Court addressed two primary issues: (1) whether NAS&#8217;s termination of Thompson&#8217;s employment constituted unlawful retaliation; and (2) whether Thompson could assert a retaliation claim under Title VII since he himself had not engaged in any protected conduct under the statute.</p>
<p>The Court first observed, with regard to the first issue, that Title VII&#8217;s anti-retaliation provision prohibits any employer action that &#8220;well might have dissuaded a reasonable worker from making or supporting a charge of discrimination.&#8221; In applying this test, the Court held that Thompson&#8217;s firing violated Title VII because a reasonable employee might decide not to make a charge of discrimination if she knew that her fianc would be fired as a result. As to the second issue, the Court noted that the language of the statute permits any person &#8220;claiming to be aggrieved&#8221; to file a Title VII retaliation lawsuit. The Court held that the term &#8220;aggrieved&#8221; covers persons with an interest that Title VII seeks to protect, i.e., employees. Thompson met this standard as he was an employee alleging unlawful conduct by his employer and this is conduct that Title VII was clearly intended to address.</p>
<p>Implications for Employers</p>
<p>One significant question that the Supreme Court left unanswered is which specific categories of relationships qualify for protection against employer reprisals? For example, will an employer be subject to liability for firing an employee who is friends with another employee who has filed a discrimination charge?</p>
<p>While refusing to create a bright line test or other specific boundaries, the Court made clear that firing a close family member will almost always meet the test, and that a more mild action affecting a mere acquaintance will almost never do so. The absence of a &#8220;bright line&#8221; rule will, however, undoubtedly create uncertainty for employers when considering actions that may negatively affect employees who may have more than a passing workplace acquaintance with another employee who has engaged in conduct protected by Title VII. Whether a relationship and employer conduct that falls between the two extremes mentioned by the Court will be actionable will depend upon the particular circumstances.</p>
<p>The New Jersey Law Against Discrimination (&#8220;LAD&#8221;) like Title VII, prohibits reprisals against employees who make complaints of discrimination. We expect that the New Jersey courts will apply the ruling in Thompson to cases involving third party retaliation claims brought under the LAD.</p>
<p>Recommendations</p>
<p>Since the Thompson decision opens the door to third-party retaliation claims, employers should be extremely cautious about taking any action with respect to one employee as a response to protected conduct of another employee. Employers should ensure that there are legitimate, documented, non-discriminatory and non-retaliatory reasons underlying any employee disciplinary action or any action that &#8220;well might have dissuaded a reasonable worker from making or supporting a charge of discrimination.&#8221; Finally, employers should ensure that their anti-retaliation and anti-discrimination policies satisfy Title VII&#8217;s and the LAD&#8217;s requirements.</p>

<p>While in school, an array of specialized accounting topics will be taught. If one appeals to you more than another, take the initiative and make that topic your main focus. It could be tax preparation, benefits management, auditing, or accounts payable/receivable. The important thing is that it interests you and you are willing to learn more about it. Ask your professors or others in your department about internships available in that specialized field. There&#8217;s little to no money in it, but the benefits reaped in experience could be invaluable later on.</p>

While resumes are generally considered to be the only source for determining whether or not the applicant will be interviewed, those who read them usually make that decision in less than a minute. <p>There are no set entry requirements for apprenticeships. Apprenticeships are open to anyone living in England, currently not in full-time education or not holding a university degree. Entry requirements are flexible because apprenticeships are not just based on academic achievement. Employers value your enthusiasm for work and desire to learn, so your practical skills and interest in your chosen area are very important.</p>
<p>In order to apply you need to show that:</p>
<p>- You are committed;</p>
<p>- You can show that you&#8217;ve fully researched the area of work you want to do, and you&#8217;re the right person for the job;</p>
<p>- You know your responsibilities towards yourself and the company that employs you;</p>
<p>- You&#8217;re prepared to put a lot of effort into learning your trade;</p>
<p>- You are realistic about the amount of work and study you&#8217;re required to put in during your apprenticeship;</p>
<p>- You can convince them you can work equally well by yourself and as part of a team;</p>
<p>- You are able to use your own initiative.</p>
<p>Apprenticeships can be demanding, but very rewarding. It&#8217;s not just a question of seeing what&#8217;s out there and then selecting your career path. It helps if you&#8217;re focused enough to know what you want to do before you apply.</p>
<p>16 OR UNDER?</p>
<p>Young Apprenticeships offer young people in Key Stage 4 (aged 14 to 16) an opportunity to take a programme that involves both work-based learning and 50 days of work experience placement within a sector. Since its creation, the Young Apprenticeship has expanded to a programme that recruits some 9,000 young people each year, and is very successful in leading them onto a full apprenticeship post-16, where they often gain an advanced apprenticeship some twelve months earlier than other young people. This programme is expected to be mainstreamed over the next few years.</p>
<p>YOUR APPLICATION</p>
<p>After you&#8217;ve received all the background information make sure you apply as soon as you can. Places may not be available for long as there&#8217;s a high demand for many of the apprenticeships on offer, so be aware that there may be competition to get your desired place. As soon as you find something you like, get down to filling in all the necessary forms and be sure to confirm meetings with employers. Remember that you&#8217;re not automatically guaranteed an apprenticeship place. The selection process is like any other job application and you&#8217;ll have to convince people to take you on by showing them you&#8217;re the right person for the job. <p>To qualify to apply for Paramedic Science or any other Paramedic degree course the usual basic requirements are 5 GCSEs including English and Maths at grade C or above and 2 A levels or the equivalent, again at grade C or above. Both your GCSE?s and A levels will preferably include a science subject but not necessarily biology.</p>
<p>Due to the nature of the work, for Paramedic Courses they will often consider alternative equivalent qualifications. These should demonstrate your ability to work academically at the same level and might include for example Baccalaureates, NVQs or O.U. credits.</p>
<p>There are always far more applicants than places for Paramedic Science degree courses, sometimes as many as 20 for each at some universities. Relevant work experience is absolutely essential if you are to compete for a place. This can be paid or unpaid and should include working with the public, preferably in a healthcare setting.</p>
<p>Such pre-paramedic experience might include working at a care home, volunteering with the Red Cross, assisting at a local cardiac rehabilitation group, or diabetic information and education sessions, volunteering at your local hospice or even working as a lifeguard at a local pool.</p>
<p>To find this type of experience can be a challenge but start at your local G.P. surgery. Search their noticeboard and speak with the receptionists and if possible the practise or district nurse. These people will know about hese groups and who to contact.</p>
<p>Work experience at hospitals or G.P.s surgeries is great but almost always short term. The Paramedic Science admissions team will want to see some longer term experience over 3 months or more to demonstrate your commitment.</p>
